Saint Mark’s High School is proud to host two events to honor and support veterans & their families on Wednesday, November 8.
Veterans Day Breakfast 7:30 am - 9:00 am
The first event is a Veterans Day Breakfast. We welcome veterans and active military members and their families from their alumni, student families, and the community at large. The family style breakfast is free. Donations are welcome to support the Corporal Stephen M. McGowan Fund. Named in honor of Stephen McGowan, a 1996 graduate of Saint Marks who was killed in Iraq in 2005 while serving in the army, the fund provides financial assistance for the children of active-duty military and veterans to attend Saint Mark’s. Register by clicking the button to the right.
At 10 AM on the same day, we will host the Corporal Stephen M. McGowan 20K Challenge.
This 20K trek will be held on the track of Saint Mark's High School to raise funds for the Corporal Stephen M. McGowan Fund. This fund assists the children veterans and active military who wish to attend Saint Mark's. School President and veteran, Tom Fertal, will signal the start of the event and participate himself by carrying a 20-pound pack for 20 kilometers or 50 laps around the track, a total of 12.4 miles.
Individuals and teams of 2 or more people are welcome to participate in the challenge. There is no fee to register. All participants are asked to raise a minimum of $200. Donation pages for all participants will be created upon registration. Individual participants are encouraged to carry a 20-pound pack but are not required. Teams are expected to have at least one pack to be shared amongst the team members. Teams may complete laps en masse or in a relay fashion or in a combination of both. The event will conclude at 2 PM, 4 hours from the start, regardless of laps completed by participants.
It is important to note that this is not a race but a challenge. There are no awards for finish times. The true reward is creating opportunities for the children of veterans. A timing clock will be on display for pacing purposes. This event is open to the public. Food will be available. Veterans and active military who would like to support participants are welcome to do so. Saint Mark’s students and faculty will also be on hand to support participants.
